COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nonprofits and local churches have teamed up to run an overnight warming center at Getsemani Community Center (412 East 19th Street), where volunteers provide shelter, food, and showers amid severe winter weather. The center will remain open until February 3 to offer basic services for residents facing low nighttime temperatures.  The Williamson County Sun
  • Sun City Texas launched its year-long celebration of 30 years as a Del Webb community earlier in January with local events for active residents. The resort-style community—home to over 18,000 residents in 87 neighborhoods—marks the milestone with ongoing festivities.  The Williamson County Sun

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ken Oliver, an 86-year-old rock collector and education ambassador, will lead the Williamson County Gem and Mineral Society’s annual Gemboree on Feb. 14 and 15 at the San Gabriel Park community center.   • The Palace Theatre experienced flooding on Thursday, Jan. 29, causing the cancellation of Frozen and Swing! The Musical as officials review future scheduling.  The Williamson County Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Good Water Master Naturalist classes offered by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Texas Parks & Wildlife Department will begin in March, providing volunteer training in the education and conservation of Texas natural resources using hands-on methods & field work. Locals may sign up for this spring program to support water conservation efforts across Georgetown.  The Williamson County Sun
  • Georgetown ISD’s new trustee Laura Kincheloe is finishing out retired trustee Stephanie Blanck’s term — focusing on the future as she runs for a three-year school board term on May 2.  The Williamson County Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On January 24, an altercation unfolded at the Golden Age Gala in Round Rock when District 31 candidate Valentina Gomez engaged with Congressman John Carter — the GOP later informed that Gomez is banned from future party events.  The Williamson County Sun
  • Georgetown Fire Department will design, build and operate an eighth fire station at Westinghouse Road and Farm to Market 1460 plus launch a pilot EMS model on State Highway 29 over the next two fiscal years. The projects aim to shorten response times in southern Georgetown as the population grows.  The Williamson County Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Saramma George at St. David’s Georgetown Hospital advises adults over 50 to start low and go slow with a mix of simple exercises and local Parks and Recreation classes (including SilverSneakers) to build strength, balance, and maintain independence.  The Williamson County Sun
