Sen. Charles Schwertner from Georgetown filed Senate Bill 8 that would require sheriffs in counties with over 100,000 people to join ICE's 287(g) program—he said the law will help keep local communities safe.
Some law enforcement leaders worry the bill may strain budgets as it moves toward a vote today at the Capitol.
